Routines can be beneficial for all children, particularly when it comes to getting ready in the morning. Predictable, established daily rhythms and patterns are especially appealing to children with autism, especially when those routines are broken down into easily accomplishable steps and tasks.
Mornings will be less stressful for you and your child if you plan and implement some behavioral approaches.
Here are a few tips to help you start the day strong and have a more productive, calm day:
Routines are the foundation of daily life, especially for ASD children. One of the most beneficial things we can do for our families is to establish a consistent daily schedule. It alleviates stress, prevents unwanted emotions, restores calm and order, and promotes shared family activities.
Consider what you can do the night before, such as packing lunches, showering, organizing backpacks, and laying out clothes.
Timers can be a lifesaver in the morning! Set a timer between each activity so your child knows when to move on to the next. Using a timer together with a visual schedule is an even more effective strategy!
Making visual schedules with pictures can help a child in adhering to their expected morning routine. Visual tools can also aid in the development of independence, which is an important skill to begin developing in ASD children.
The most effective way to have a successful morning routine is to stick to the schedule as closely as possible. Creating a new morning routine can be difficult at first. However, the more you stick with it, the easier it will be for both you and your child. Stick with it even if you have two or three bad mornings in a row. The perseverance will eventually pay off.
Yes, it may take some time for your child to develop the habit of following a visual schedule in the mornings. But with time, practice, and patience, they’ll be able to get ready for the day on their own!
