Choosing an ABA Therapist: What to Look For

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is an evidence-based treatment that can improve people with autism’s quality of life. This type of therapy is tailored to each individual’s needs in order to develop skills and reduce dangerous or harmful behaviors.

It’s critical to find an ABA provider who will work well with you and your family. Therapy will be more successful—and fun—if a person trusts their therapist and enjoys spending time with them.

What should you look for in an ABA therapist?

Empathetic

ABA is an evidence-based treatment that works best when individuals with autism are paired with compassionate and empathetic therapists. Empathy is essential for ABA therapists. An understanding ABA therapist should take the time to understand why the child is acting the way he or she is and be willing to change course if the planned session isn’t working.

Adaptable

Human beings are always unpredictable, no matter how carefully and professionally designed a treatment program is. Even the most meticulous plans can be thwarted in an instant, with no warning. ABA therapists must be able to detect changes in the client’s behavioral response quickly and adjust accordingly. To best serve clients’ needs, ABA therapists must be able to adapt to different environments, client behaviors, and other dynamics.

Patient

It can be difficult for some patients, particularly those with intellectual disabilities, to achieve behavioral and emotional health. ABA therapists must be patient in order to guide the child without overburdening them. When a setback occurs, ABA therapists must be patient in order to understand and restart. Even when things are difficult, ABA therapists must demonstrate to the child that they are not disappointing or wasting their time.

Take your time if necessary. Resist the urge to find a therapist as soon as possible, and don’t put yourself under any pressure. It’s okay to take your time until you find the right ABA therapist partnership for you.
