Lia graduated with a Diploma in Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) during her tertiary education at Temasek Polytechnic.
While pursuing her education, Lia was introduced to various modules relating to the diverse needs for the education of children, including those with special needs. Child Development, Working with Exceptional Children, Curriculum Planning & Implementation and Socio-Emotional Learning are some of the modules included in the curriculum that are designed to equip aspiring educators with the necessary knowledge to support holistic development for young children.
During her course of study, Lia was given opportunities to be attached to various preschool centres such as E-Bridge, Sparkletots and Sunflower where she would assist in the planning of lessons for children within the range of 18 months to 6 years of age. During these placements, she worked closely with experienced educators and practitioners, gaining firsthand experience in implementing individualised support plans, adapting teaching strategies, and fostering the inclusion of children with diverse abilities.
From these exposures, she would come across children with developmental delays and learning disabilities such as Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum, Drawfism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and other undiagnosed conditions. On most occasions, she would be required to shadow a child around in the classrooms to observe and assess children’s development and behaviour, using a variety of tools and techniques. This helped her to gain insights into identifying strengths, challenges, and individual learning styles, which inform of the children’s ability to provide targeted support and intervention strategies. She would be required to come up with strategies to progress on the children’s holistic development to better prepare them for the next step in their educational journey.
Lia’s ECDE journey has strengthened her belief in inclusive education for children. As she enters the field, she is committed to shaping the future of preschool education by promoting inclusivity and empowerment for children, ensuring they receive the support and opportunities they deserve to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
