Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), also known as autism, is present from infancy or early childhood, but it is unclear whether the disorder can be outgrown over time.
The short answer to this question is no; autism cannot be completely “outgrown.” But why do some people believe that it can be?
Although autism is a lifelong diagnosis, symptoms may appear to improve over time due to a number of factors. The child’s natural cognitive development can simply improve some of the mild autism symptoms that are noticed in early childhood. In addition, despite the child’s autism, it is possible for their development to be accelerated if they receive high-quality support at home and in school.
How does Autism Spectrum Disorder improve with age?
The treatment of autism symptoms can be approached in a variety of ways, but it’s important to remember that the sooner you get an autism assessment, the better. Symptoms of autism typically appear between the ages of 12 and 18 months, but in many instances, children go several years and even into adulthood without receiving a diagnosis.
We recommend seeking an autism assessment if you are concerned that your child is exhibiting developmental delays that are similar to those associated with autism. Understanding the condition and having access to treatment will make it easier to understand and manage the condition.
Early Intervention
Children who are diagnosed with autism early on may experience fewer symptoms as they become teenagers and adults. Early interventions give them the best chance for positive outcomes that will help them reach their full potential. Essentially, they reduce, if not completely eliminate, the diagnostic characteristics that could hinder their behavioral, social, and communication success.
ABA therapy
They can benefit from treatments like ABA therapy while they are still in the early stages of cognitive development and learning. It has been proven that ABA is the most efficient method of reducing the number of autism diagnoses, particularly during intervention. Rapid learning, success, and long-term observable positive effects on verbal skills, social functioning, and overall behavior.
Higher Innate Cognitive Abilities
It may appear that children with autism and IQs above average “outgrow” their autism, but this may not always be the case. They may simply become better at “masking” their symptoms by observing and imitating other people’s behavior.
Misdiagnosed
People suspected of having autism may be misdiagnosed in some cases because they exhibit symptoms and behaviors similar to those correctly diagnosed. If this happens, the symptoms will fade to the point where they cannot be detected.
Although there is no cure for ASD, there are a number of treatment options, such as ABA, that can assist them in navigating everyday situations and developing skills.
